Title: A-Level Stock Control in Access 2007

Advanced Access 2007

Relational database design can be a difficult subject for students to understand. These Access tutorials are valuable teacher resources whether your students are starting their computer projects for A2 ICT or Applied ICT GCE projects. This stock control database example of an ICT project in Access will help them understand most of the required database design skills.

One of the things that annoys teachers is they pay a high price for a set of books only to find that the section explaining how to set up the database is actually quite brief because the book is trying to cover everything on the course in one book.

  • Does your set of books explain how to set up one query and then tell the students to figure out the rest themselves?
  • Do the students work for a few pages then need constant help because the book assumes they can figure everything out themselves because they have been shown one example?

This extensive booklet and videos don't do that. If a student needs to know how to set up six different queries for six different tasks - they are shown each one step by step.

The book covers:

  • Normalising the data, naming conventions and data types.
  • All tables are fully explained and set up - not just one.
  • Joining the tables.
  • Searching databases with operators, parameters and multiple conditions.
  • Calculations and functions are used to work out stock prices and VAT.
  • Importing data into tables. Starting auto numbers at 100.
  • Queries start with simple select queries and then move onto more complex queries such as re-order queries, potential profits and invoices.
  • Action queries are set up to make tables, update prices and stock and deleting old orders.
  • SQL is used to update the stock table from an invoice.
  • Macros are used to make an archive table and date it correctly.
  • We then look at producing the interface using forms with sub-forms.
  • Reports are created showing totals.
  • A friendly front end completes the booklet and completes a substantial stock control database.

We have found that this booklet is ideal for students in Year 12 preparing for their database project or Year 13 students taking a practical exam on database.
