Title: Relational Database Design in Access 2007

Access 2007

GCSE database projects are very popular for students when producing their coursework. Relational database design is important for the student to achieve top marks for their database project. Whether it is for a GCSE ICT coursework project or a computer project these teacher resources are invaluable as they walk the student step by step right from the beginning. Most students will use the 71 page booklet. Others will only use the Access video tutorials.

Access is one of the most used pieces of software in schools for producing coursework. I myself have a stack of books costing hundreds of pounds that have good detail in them but also have lots of other information that put students off using them other than dipping into them for certain topics.

This booklet and video series walks the student and even new teachers to Access through the process of setting up a relational database. The scenario is a book shop.

  • There are three main tables - tblCustomers, tblLoans and tblBooks.
  • There are also three lookup tables of tblCounty, tblTownCity and tblCategory.
  • The theory is also built into the design section in a very simple manner looking at EAR diagrams, normalisation, joins, data types, primary and foreign keys, input masks and validations.
  • Forms with sub-forms are used. We look at setting the properties of forms and adding controls.
  • Queries are set up to feed reports showing late books and calculations are performed showing how this can be achieved in queries. A mail merged Word document is also produced for late books.
  • Reports are also produced to show how data can be merged from different tables through queries onto a report.

The booklet contains 71 pages of step by step fully illustrated instructions that are very easy to follow. The students will be able to work through this either in class or take the booklet home and use it along with the videos if they wish to see each stage explained to them by a very experienced ICT teacher. Students who watch the videos produce a relational database in a very quick period of time.
